AI Chatbot
Put an assistant on your website that answers visitors from your own content: your articles, your services, your FAQ. It runs day and night, replies in the visitor's language, and links to the right page of your site.
Open AI Chatbot in the sidebar.
Who can do what
| Role | Access |
|---|---|
| Editor | Overview and conversations |
| Developer | Everything, including settings, knowledge and installation |
| Administrator | Everything, including settings, knowledge and installation |
Setting it up
- Open AI Chatbot › Settings.
- Under What it knows, tick the content types it should read. Only published entries are used: drafts and scheduled entries stay private.
- Optionally click Link to your pages next to a content type and give its page address, such as
https://www.example.com/blog/{slug}, so answers can link to the page. Diggama holds the content but your website decides where it lives, so this cannot be guessed. Any text field of the blueprint can be used as a placeholder, plus{id}. - Optionally switch on Use your website's sitemap to enrich answers and paste your sitemap's address, or just your website's (see Your website).
- Add Documents for what is not on your site yet: opening hours, delivery terms, a return policy, an FAQ. Plain text or Markdown; questions and answers work best.
- Write the Instructions: tone, what to push, what to avoid, how to reach a human. Facts written here are known too.
- Pick a name, a colour, a welcome message and up to four suggested questions. The live preview on the right follows as you type.
- Switch it on and click Save.
Try it in the preview: conversations started there are free and labelled Test.
Installing it on your website
Paste the snippet from Settings › Install (or the Overview) before </body> on every page where the chat should appear:
html
<script src="https://api.diggama.com/chat/widget.js" data-chatbot="cb_xxxxxxxx" defer></script>It works on any site: WordPress, Webflow, Astro, Next.js or plain HTML. The widget is isolated from your styles, adapts to phones, and remembers a visitor's conversation when they change page.
To open it from your own button:
js
DiggamaChat.open() // also DiggamaChat.close() and DiggamaChat.toggle()Add data-open="true" to the script tag to open it as soon as the page loads.
What it knows, and when it learns
Nothing is trained. Before each answer the chatbot checks whether your content or documents changed and, if so, reads them again. A publication, an edit or a new document is used from the next answer. Learn now forces it.
When your knowledge is small, the whole of it is given to the model with every question. When it grows, the passages that best match the question are picked.
The chatbot is told to answer only from this knowledge and your instructions. When it does not know, it says so and points to your contact details instead of inventing an answer. It politely declines anything unrelated to your site.
Your website
The chatbot can also read your website through its sitemap, which suits a site whose pages are not all in Diggama. Paste the sitemap's address (https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml) or just your website's: Diggama then looks for the sitemap named in your robots.txt, then at /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml.
- Up to 100 pages are read, the shallowest first (
/servicesbefore/blog/2024/a-post). Sitemap indexes are followed. - Only pages on the sitemap's own domain are read. Images, PDFs and other files are skipped.
- From each page, the main content is kept: menus, headers, footers, forms and scripts are left out.
- Answers can link to these pages, without any page address to set up.
- Reading takes up to a minute after Save. The pages are read again every night while the chatbot is on, and Read again does it straight away.
Clearing the address forgets the pages.
Collecting contact details
Ask for contact details turns conversations into leads:
| Setting | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Never | Visitors chat straight away |
| Optional | A short form offers name and email, with a Skip button |
| Required | An email is needed before the first message |
Names and emails show in Conversations, and the With email filter lists them.
Conversations
AI Chatbot › Conversations lists every exchange, latest first, with who the visitor is (name, email, or an anonymous label), the page they were on, their browser and country, and the full transcript. Visitors can mark an answer as helpful or not; Unhelpful answers shows the conversations where they did, which is where your knowledge needs work.
A developer or administrator can delete a conversation, for instance when someone asks for their data to be erased.
Credits
Each plan includes a number of conversations per month. One conversation is one visitor session, however many messages it holds. Conversations from the settings preview are not counted.
The Overview shows what is left this month. Once it is used up, new visitors see your Offline message instead of the chat, while visitors already chatting can finish. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month. The Usage page shows it next to your other limits.
Security
- Allowed domains: list your website's domains so the snippet only works there (subdomains included). Empty means any site.
- Regenerate the public key if your snippet is being used somewhere it should not be. The old snippet stops working.
- Visitors are rate-limited, messages are capped at 1,000 characters and a conversation at 60 messages.
